Travel Tips

Passports and Visas

To enter Tanzania, all visitors must have a valid passport with an entry or re-entry visa and proof of a return or onward ticket. Visitors from certain Commonwealth countries and other specified countries are exempt from obtaining permits. Still, permits can be applied for online or at any Tanzania Diplomatic Mission or Consulate overseas, as well as at primary points of entry.

Health

Visitors from or transiting through a yellow fever-endemic country must provide a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate upon arrival. It is advisable for visitors to take anti-malaria tablets and use mosquito nets and insect sprays when available. Visitors are also advised to have travel insurance that includes medical coverage.

Gadgets

Visitors can bring personal items like cameras and binoculars into Tanzania without duty fees. Professional filming equipment, radios, tape recorders, musical instruments and firearms require permits or bonds. Keep receipts and certificates for local handicrafts and wildlife trophies.

Currency

The Tanzania Shilling is the official currency, divided into 100 cents. Visitors can bring foreign currency into Tanzania, but it is illegal to import or export local currency. Foreign currency in cash or traveller's checks can be exchanged at commercial banks or authorized dealers, as well as at Bureaux de Change at international airports, major towns, and border posts.Visitors can bring foreign currency to Tanzania, but can't import or export local currency. Departures

All visitors departing Tanzania by air are subject to a USD 30 airport tax, which is usually included in their airline ticket. Baggage may be weighed and inspected by Customs. Domestic flights have a departure tax of approximately USD 6. All taxes are subject to change, and there is no departure tax for those travelling by road.

Luggage

Due to limited space on safari vehicles and small aircraft, visitors are advised to travel with lightweight soft-sided bags instead of bulky suitcases.

Climate

Tanzania has a varied climate due to its size and landscapes. Most areas are hot and humid year-round, but temperatures vary by location and season. Two rainy seasons occur from March to May and October to December, which is crucial for agriculture. Tanzania's climate is unique and diverse, making it a great destination for travellers.
